What is Occupational Therapy?

Art and Science
Occupations
Play and Neuroscience

Paediatric occupational therapy is a child-focused health profession that uses evidence from neuroscience to understand how the developing brain and nervous system support sensory, motor, cognitive and emotional skills, and applies that knowledge to enable meaningful occupations—everyday activities such as play, self‑care, school tasks and social participation. Through assessment and targeted interventions that promote engagement (active, motivated participation in activities) and build capacity, OT therapists support children to acquire skills, adapt tasks and modify environments so they can achieve functional independence—performing age‑appropriate occupations safely and with confidence across home, school and community settings. The Person–Environment–Task model conceptualizes occupational performance as the dynamic interaction between an individual's intrinsic capacities (physical, cognitive, emotional, developmental), the external environment (physical, social, cultural, temporal, institutional), and the specific tasks or occupations they undertake (requirements, complexity, meaning). Optimal function arises when these elements align; assessment therefore focuses on identifying mismatches—person-task, person-environment, or task-environment—that limit participation. Interventions are targeted accordingly: addressing person factors through skill development or compensatory strategies, modifying environments (physical adaptations, routines, social supports), or adapting and grading tasks to match ability and context. Client-centred goal-setting prioritizes the weakest link in the fit and uses occupation-based, measurable outcomes to guide therapy and improve independence and participation.
