Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Fifth Edition of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM 5)*, is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with symptoms that include "persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts" and "restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities."
Social communication and social interaction
Atypical social-communication styles across settings: differences in back-and-forth interaction, nonverbal cues (eye contact, gestures, facial expression), and forming peer relationships; reflecting neurodivergent social processing.
Repetitive movements for regulation
Neurodivergent patterns: repetitive movements or speech, preference for routine and focused interests, and unique sensory responses—these differences reflect sensory and cognitive styles that benefit from predictable, respectful support and understanding.

Autism is a natural variation in human neurodevelopment that affects how a person experiences, processes, and responds to the world. It shapes communication, sensory processing, movement, emotional regulation, and social connection, influencing how relationships form and meaning is expressed. Autism unfolds developmentally across the lifespan as a dynamic way of being, not a fixed list of behaviours and autistic individuals are whole people with strengths, challenges, passions, and unique individuality.
Social Communication, Social Interaction and Sensory Motor Differences
Autistic individuals show differences in social-communication styles across settings: differences in back-and-forth interaction, nonverbal cues such as eye contact, gestures, facial expression, and forming peer relationships; reflecting neurodivergent social processing.
- For back‑and‑forth interaction, a child may prefer extended monologues about a special interest rather than reciprocal small talk, or an adult may need extra time to answer questions in a meeting.
- For eye contact, someone might avoid looking directly at a speaker because it is overwhelming, yet still listen closely and respond appropriately via words or gestures.
- Gestures and facial expressions can differ in timing or intensity — a teen may use fewer conventional gestures but point or show objects in ways that make sense to them.
- In group settings, a child might play alongside peers (parallel play) rather than engaging in cooperative games, yet enjoy shared activities if roles are structured.
- In classrooms, a student may miss subtle social cues like sarcasm but respond reliably to direct, literal instructions.
- In noisy or busy environments, sensory overload can reduce social reciprocity (withdrawal or muted expression) even though the desire for connection remains.
- For friendships, autistic people often form deep, rule‑based or interest‑shared relationships rather than casual, small‑talk friendships.
- Hyper‑reactivity (over‑ responsiveness): exaggerated responses to sensory input such as covering ears to moderate noise, avoiding certain textures, distress in busy environments.
- Hypo‑reactivity (under‑responsiveness): reduced or delayed responses to sensory cues such as may not notice name called or appears uninterested in touch.
- Sensory seeking: craving intense sensory input such as spinning, deep pressure, excessive touching or mouthing objects to self‑regulate.
- Arousal regulation difficulties: rapid shifts between hyper‑ and hypo‑arousal, impacting attention, behaviour, and learning.
- Multisensory overload: difficulty integrating competing sensory input such as visual, auditory, tactile leading to withdrawal, shutdown, or meltdown.
- Impaired motor planning- praxis: difficulty with novel ideas of play, sequencing and executing novel or multi‑step movements.
- Postural control, balance and coordination: poor core stability and trouble sustaining posture, trouble coordinating both sides of the body and synchronizing movement and rhythm.
- Fine and oral‑motor challenges: reduced hand precision, in‑hand manipulation and difficulties with feeding and speech coordination.
Social communication differences vary by context, support, and familiarity; adapting communication such as clear language, extra processing time, visual supports, and sensory accommodations to foster more successful interactions.
Sensory‑motor differences such as sensory over and under‑ responsiveness, poor postural control, praxis deficits, and atypical motor timing reduce a child’s ability to attend, gesture, imitate, and engage in reciprocal interactions which are core mechanisms through which early communication is learned.
Repetitive Movements and Interests
Repetitive interests and behaviors are common, meaningful expressions of autistic neurology: ways of seeking predictability, sensory input, pleasure, focus, or calm. Seen respectfully, they reveal strengths like intense focus, pattern recognition, expertise and also practical needs such as routine, sensory regulation, safe outlets.
Repetitive Motor Movements
Examples: hand‑flapping, rocking, body‑swaying, finger‑tapping, spinning.
Function: sensory input, excitement release, self‑soothing.
Repetitive use of objects
Examples: lining up toys, spinning wheels, flipping pages, repeatedly opening/closing doors.
Function: visual/proprioceptive stimulation, predictability, pattern exploration.
Repetitive speech/ vocalisations
Examples: echolalia (repeating words/phrases), scripting from movies, humming, repeated questions.
Function: processing language, comfort, regulation, rehearsal.
Intense/focused interests
Examples: deep knowledge about trains, maps, schedules, dinosaurs, specific TV shows.
Function: joy, mastery, identity, cognitive strength.
Insistence on sameness & routines
Examples: fixed daily routes, strict meal preferences, specific ordering of tasks, distress with small changes.
Function: predictability, reduced anxiety, control over environment.
Ritualised behaviours & routines
Examples: greeting rituals, precise bedtime sequences, repetitive play scripts.
Function: structure, transition support, meaning‑making.
Restricted sensory patterns (hyper-/hyporeactivity)
Examples: strong reactions to sounds or textures, visual fascination with lights, high pain tolerance, excessive sniffing/touching.
Function: sensory regulation, information‑seeking, comfort.
Repetitive cognitive routines / rigid thinking
Examples: insistence on exact rules in games, literal interpretation, difficulty with flexible problem solving.
Function: predictability, reduced cognitive load, fairness/consistency preference.
Forcing cessation of repetitive movements (stimming)
Can increase distress and dysregulation, reduce self‑regulation and communication, and escalate anxiety or shutdown.
Autism does not mean
It does not mean a person needs to be "fixed," reduced to observable behaviors, or forced to appear typical; nor that compliance is more important than connection or that natural communication, movement, or self‑regulation should be suppressed.It also does not mean measuring progress solely by how closely someone imitates others.
